Yeah, I face the same questions. I usually (still) go with explaining what affiliate marketing is. Takes a while but eventually people get it.

Since I mainly do SEO (and not PPC) which involves creating many websites, the worst part is often people confuse this with basic web design. “So, you build websites for other people? where do you get clients?”. This is extremely frustrating since I worked as a real programmer for many years (not that web design is bad, but it’s – well – not really programming).

lol.. on a serious note. I’ve used ALL of those you listed David.. I don’t know what to say either. I’ve gotten tired of having to explain it to everyone, sometimes I’m pretty creative with spontaneous ideas but I won’t go into those.

It won’t be too long before affiliate marketer will be up there with doctor and lawyer. People understand traditional advertising and have certainly adapted to the Internet, so why not combine the two and make online marketer a common title?

I think it depends on the audience. If it’s family, friends, or someone who I’d know would have no interest:

- “I have an online marketing firm”

If I want to get a little more “professional” about it:

- “I’m in business development”

If it’s a small business owner or someone who might be interested in something like SEO, web development, PPC management it’s:

- “I find new customers and leads for businesses.”

which usually prompts a follow-up question.

Obviously, if you’re only “slingin’ berries” and don’t want any work from the local businesses, it makes sense to stick to the first 2.

I simply say that I own a business in marketing and advertising that happens to be online. When they ask for more information, I tell them that I help companies generate leads and sell physical products online in return for a share of the company’s revenue.

Very truthful and to the point.
